Some specimens are said to be a thousand years old and one with a hollow stem is a locally well known picnic place. The tree flowers in December with large creamy white flowers and the edible fruits can be harvested from May onwards. It is said to be frost sensitive, but although frost occurs in East Bushmanland these trees seem to be adapted to it. Although literature says that A. digitata germinates very easily, germination trials at the Research Station were not very successful. The highest rate was 8% after boiling the seed for 30 seconds, soaking it for another 3 minutes in the hot water and then removing it and planting it.";

The white pulp inside the hard, woody shell of the fruit is eaten raw and has a very sweet taste. The Vasekele say you will become fat if you eat it a lot. The pulp is often mixed with water to prepare a kind of juice, which can be sweetened with sugar if sugar is available. It is said that if you drink this refreshing juice before every meal, you will soon be fat! Wehmeyer (1976) says the pulp is rich in Vitamin C.";
