The leaves are alternate and slightly 3-lobed, and the leaf margins and veins are reddish coloured. The whole plant - except for the upper sides of the leaves - is covered with hairs which when touched can cause a bad itching especially if the plant gets dry. The children eat them raw, but eating a large quantity can easily cause inflammations in the mouth. Therefore they are preferably cooked and the water is changed three times. Then the water is squeezed out of the cooked leaves by hand and they are eaten as a vegetable with meat or maize porridge. They are also suitable for preparing a soup.";
