The surface of the leaves is rubbed open with a kind of wooden knife in order to release the fibers. Then the fibers are wound into strings for many different purposes. The rhizome is a source of water. It is chewed to squeeze out the water and the rest is spat out. The taste is said to be like water.

Medical use: The sap of the leaves and the rhizome are both used as a remedy for treating suppurating ears. This is repeated for 2 days and on the third day, when the leaf is removed, the pus will flow and the ear will heal. To use the rhizome, it is firstly burnt and the ash is then mixed with oil of Ochna pulchra. This mixture is dropped into the ear for three times a day and closed with a soft leaf and the treatment has to continue as described for the sap.";
