db[0][10]="A fairly common shrub or small tree up to 5m tall which grows on both deep and loamy sand. The bark is grey and often peels, exposing a brownish underbark. Young stems and branches very often bear longish galls which are parasited. The leaves are clustered, blue-green and covered with silvery hairs. The flowers form axillary, yellowish green spikes during October and November and have a powerful and very unpleasant scent. It seems that the flowers are pollinated by flies. The fruit is single-winged and brown to red brown in colour.";

It is used for poles as fencing material, and it is the most important wood for hut construction. It is said to last at least for 5 years. The roots are cut into strips and are used as a strong rope for hut construction.
The plant produces an edible gum which is eaten by Ju\oasi and Punguvlei. The Vasekele are afraid that the gum will block the oesophagus and therefore do not eat it. During the rainy season, thousands of caterpillars are feeding on the leaves of this shrub. These caterpillars are an important food source during the time they are available. For preparation see under Burkea africana.

Medical use: The leaves are cooked in water and the infusion is taken as a remedy for treating cough. Leaves and roots can be used for curing diarrhea. In case of a severe diarrhea, the roots are cooked in water and the hot decoction is taken 3 times per day. In case of a light diarrhea, the leaves are cooked in water and the hot infusion is also taken 3 times per day. The same decoction of roots can also be used to treat stomach ache and it is regarded as the most effective cure for stomach ache. The roots are also used as a natural plaster for bleeding wounds: scraped pieces of the roots are cooked in water until they form a viscous porridge. This is applied in a thick layer to the bleeding wound and remains there until it falls away by itself. By this time, the wound will be healed. Alternatively the skin of a root is cut open at one side and flattened and is then put like a plaster onto the wound. More pieces of the roots are then used to make a bandage.";
