The dark green leaves are opposite, soft and densely covered with hairs. The flowers are small, form clusters in greenish yellow and appear from October to January. The fruits are almost circular, up to 4cm in diameter, turning from green to brown-orange when ripe. They have a thin skin and contain several longish seeds which are covered by an orange flesh. The fruits are ripe from January onwards and are gathered up to May. <br>Germination trials at the Forestry Research Station Kanovlei showed a germination rate of 87% with no seed pre-treatment and 92% with seeds soaked for 24h in cold water. Seeds were sown at the end of July 96, using seeds from the present year.";

It is sweet and refreshing and is well-liked. When the fruits start getting dry from April onwards, they are soaked in water for a certain time, then boiled and mashed a little bit and eaten as a kind of porridge. Unfortunately the fresh fruits cannot be stored for more than a week. But they can be dried in the sun and then stored for almost one year. The fruit is an important food source and has, in the author's opinion, a potential for commercial use.";
